600,000 Macs Suffered from Botnet

Apple users are expected to be suffering a crisis of faith: it recently turned out the company’s faith-based security system failed to prevent more than 600,000 Macs throughout the world from being attacked by the Flashback Trojan.
The malware in question is meant to steal personal data from those hapless Mac users who have been doing nothing to protect their system except for twiddling their thumbs. Indeed, plenty of people are satisfied with the impenetrable fortress of security that Apple’s computers are, for some reason, perceived to be. Flashback Trojan worms its way onto OS X devices and demands administrator passwords. In case a user hands it over, the virus will install itself into the computer and comb for personal information.

Dr. Web, one of the major Russian antivirus companies, first reported that over 550,000 Mac machines
across the world had already been compromised by the creeping botnet. In a while, one of CNET’s analysts reported that the figure was more likely to be over 600,000, which included 274 bots found in Apple’s stamping ground, Cupertino.

The Flashback botnet originally disguised itself as a Flash plug-in. However, new versions have been popping up since, because the botnet started exploiting a range of Java vulnerabilities to target Mac machines.

Today Apple has released a patch which is meant to squash the vulnerability. However, it’s only up to Apple users whether they will rush to protect their computers or not. Last week, Sophos’ Graham Cluley urged computer users to be vigilant, pointing at the fact that there had been a whole flood of Mac malware activity against Apple users a year ago, with a steady stream since.

Security experts warn all Mac users to pay attention to protection of their machines and encourage them to consider that a lot of hacker attacks aren’t specifically technical, but instead rely on social engineering and human folly.

Apple customers would be "foolhardy" not to protect their devices with anti-virus software, which should also be kept updated. According to security experts, not many users are concerned over this problem, though there are free Mac anti-virus options available out there. Even when users really have nothing to lose, they still fail to spend couple minutes to consider the security issues.

France Against Google

Google has been defending from the complaints of the French data protection outfits. The search giant claims that its new privacy policy is legal and the company is educating its users about the ins and outs of it.

The country’s Commission Nationale de l'Informatique (aka CNIL) is currently investigating the new privacy policy of the online giant, as it is actually the Supreme Dalek of data protection regulators in 27 member states of the European Union. The Commission Nationale de l'Informatique has already announced that it has really strong doubts that the company’s approach to privacy complies with EU legislation.

The outfit has penned a missive to the company, demanding Google to provide explanation on what it does
with its user information it collects, how long it stores it, and whether it can be linked to the user’s real identity, along with the legal justifications.

According to Jacob Kohnstamm, the head of the Dutch data protection authority, if the search giant persists in its current plan, it may face serious problems. The Commission Nationale de l'Informatique was ready to give the company from a week to a few months to fix things, otherwise they threatened to fine Google into a coma. Meanwhile, the other members of the European Union can deal with it differently.

In response, Peter Fleischer, the giant’s global privacy counsel, explained that Google has always been committed to providing its users with comprehensive privacy information and was as well happy to meet EU regulators and explain how the system it sticks to works. According to the search giant, the company is simplifying its privacy policy by consolidating sixty guidelines into a single one. This only guideline will then apply for all Google’s services offered worldwide.

However, there is something that makes the privacy watchdogs become concerned. This is about the fact that the company pools information it collects on individual users through its services. Google says that this feature allows it to “better tailor search results” as well as “improve service”. Of course, you can understand that it means that the company would be able to hit each user with better personalized advertisements and nothing else. Unfortunately, users can’t opt out of this feature.

Hackers Invaded China

Famous hacking group Anonymous has invaded China. The hacktivists already managed to deface hundreds of government sites. The institutional targets were listed by the hackers on Pastebin to let the group’s members go for them.

The International Business Times published an article, where they cited one of the Anonymous spokespeople. The latter confirmed that hundreds of Chinese websites had been defaced or taken offline by the group of hacktivists. Of course, they didn’t to do it for fun without explaining the reason – Anonymous have always been known for delivering ideas. This time, again, it turned out that each defaced homepage now carried a statement against the Chinese government. The websites also featured the traditional Anonymous banner, along with Baba O’Riley by The Who playing in the background: the visitors must
have been impressed.

According to the published statement, the Chinese authorities have subjected their people to both unfair laws and unhealthy processes. The statement read: “Dear government, you aren’t infallible”. The hackers warned that while today they only hacked the country’s websites, tomorrow they could address Chinese vile regime that would fall with the same ease. Anonymous pointed out that each Chinese citizen suffers from the tyranny of the local regime that knows nothing about them. The hacktivists promised that Anonymous would always support them and the silence of all other states could only emphasize the lack of democracy and justice in the country. The defacement went as far as to provide hints on how to bypass the government’s censorship.

This massive attack came after Chinese state media announced a crackdown on a number of websites and punished a couple of social services, while arresting 6 people for “spreading rumors of a coup”.

Chinese teen sells kidney to buy iPhone, iPad

BEIJING: Five people in southern China have been charged with intentional injury in the case of a Chinese teenager who sold a kidney so he could buy an iPhone and an iPad, the government-run Xinhua News Agency said on Friday.
The five included a surgeon who removed a kidney from a 17-year-old boy in April last year. The boy, identified only by his surname Wang, now suffers from renal deficiency, Xinhua quoted prosecutors in Chenzhou city, Hunan province as saying.

According to the Xinhua account, one of the defendants received about 220,000 yuan (about $35,000) to arrange the transplant. He paid Wang 22,000 yuan and split the rest with the surgeon, the three other defendants and other medical staff.

The report did not say who received and paid for the kidney.

The teen was from Anhui, one of China’s poorest provinces, where inhabitants frequently leave to find work and a better life elsewhere. He bought an iPhone and iPad, and when asked by his mother where he got the money, admitted selling a kidney.

Apple products are hugely popular in China, but are priced beyond the reach of many Chinese. IPhones start at 3,988 yuan ($633), and iPads begin at 2,988 yuan ($474).

Wang’s renal deficiency is deteriorating, Xinhua quoted prosecutors as saying.

Only a fraction of the people who need organ transplants in China are able to get them, leading to “transplant tourism” where patients travel overseas for such operations, and to a black market for human organs.

China banned the trading of human organs in 2007, Xinhua said. Several other suspects involved in the case are still being investigated. (Reuters)

British Muslim who entered Miss Universe contest receives death threat

Shanna Bukhari was subjected to a tide of online hate after entering the British heats of the beauty contest. Now she fears her life could be in danger

When Shanna Bukhari decided she wanted to be the first Muslim to represent Britain in a global beauty pageant, she suspected the road ahead might not be smooth, but nothing could have prepared her for the abuse she received.

"I have felt in fear for my life," said the 24-year-old Miss Universe contestant. The attacks escalated last week when Bukhari received her first death threat.

The censure has come from various quarters, ranging from Muslims who claim that she is denigrating the name of Islam, to white supremacists who say that an Asian cannot represent the UK, and to women who condemn beauty pageants as an affront to feminism.

Bukhari, born in Blackburn, grew up in Lancashire and is no stranger to intolerance. When she was nine, she ended up in hospital after a man screaming racist abuse had thrown a brick at her, causing so much damage to her stomach that she suffered a blood clot and had to
undergo surgery.

But even she has been surprised by the furore that her participation in the British heats of Miss Universe has prompted. Rather than confirming her hopes that society had progressed since her childhood, the controversy has made her question the state of multiculturalism in modern Britain. "It has highlighted the divisions that exist, a lack of social integration, a lack of adhesion between white and coloured people, and this needs to be addressed," she said. "I thought my participation might be something that people did not agree with, but I never thought I'd get abused."

The attacks on the Manchester-based English literature graduate began after a local newspaper ran an article 10 days ago revealing her ambition to become the first Muslim to represent Great Britain at the beauty contest. Since then, she has received around 300 messages a day on her Facebook page, a handful of which are abusive. Most of the negative comments have come from a minority of Muslim men. "I get people saying, 'you're not a Muslim' and 'you're using religion to get attention'. I said they were the ones bringing religion into it. I'm not representing Islam; I just want to represent my country, and of that I am very proud. They are trying to control me, using religion as a tool to attack."

Bukhari accuses her abusers of having the same sort of mindset as those who support "honour" killings and beat women. Many of the comments are, she says, from individuals who want sharia law instead of a liberal democracy. "We simply live in a multicultural society where there are significant numbers of Muslims. Islam is about peace; abusing me is itself wrong in Islam."

Away from the religious-themed criticism, Bukhari detects a broader anti-female resentment from men who combine sleaze with slurs. "Maybe it's because I'm a woman saying to other women 'stand up for yourself, don't let anyone dictate what you can do or can't'. Some men don't like that," she said.

But not all the abuse is from men: Bukhari has also attracted opprobium from feminists. "I've had a few girls saying 'shame on you' or 'rot in hell'. But I'd like to know what their real issues are, so we could have a constructive debate."

The abuse that truly shocked Bukhari arrived last Tuesday in the form of an online racist rant. Within hours she had shut down her Facebook fan page, but a friend was then sent a number of internet links to images of people murdered for standing up for their principles. "She rang up and said, 'Shanna, you need to be very careful because he's trying to make me aware that things will happen'. Not a direct death threat perhaps, but he was trying to say that something is going to happen to me."

Bukhari takes the threat of physical violence seriously. She makes sure she is never alone, both in her Manchester flat and on the city streets, and has contacted a private security firm for protection when attending charity events to raise money for the Joshua Foundation, a charity for terminally ill children. She fears that Britain's Miss Universe finals in Birmingham in May will also be a target: "It worries me that haters will turn up. I know what they are capable of."

One Facebook message calls her a "dirty Muslim" and asks why she is representing Britain "when you don't even fucking belong here". Bukhari said: "I actually replied to him in a very calm manner because I'm not one to retaliate, my family taught me to rationalise rather than react. Then I thought 'why can't I represent Britain?' I was born here and am proud to be British. My parents are from Pakistan but I am not going to represent Pakistan as this is my country."

Bukhari says the abuse has been disillusioning partly because she enjoyed a liberal upbringing; her parents sent her to a Catholic school in Blackburn where she was the only Muslim but was "completely accepted". It was only when she moved to Manchester in 2001, she said, that she became aware of segregation as an issue. She does not agree with David Cameron's speech last month in which he asserted that state multiculturalism in Britain had failed. She believes that more must be done to break down mistrust.

Bukhari cites the thousands who have offered their backing. Support has come from Spain, the Middle East, Pakistan, India and China. Most women supporters say she represents not just a role model for Muslim women, but all those who refuse to be cowed by bullies.

During last month's semi-final for Britain's Miss Universe candidate Bukhari received the most public votes. Britain has never won the title. It is increasingly possible that its first victor might also be its first Muslim representative.

Internet Explorer is Back

Internet Explorer seemed to be written off in the war between Firefox and Chrome. However, today it appears that the browser is making a comeback.
Statistics, provided by Net Market Share, revealed that for the second time in 3 months, Internet Explorer made large gains, picking up around 1% of market share. Consequently, Google’s Chrome, Firefox, and Safari lost ground with Internet Explorer 9 winning over new users.

According to the latest results, Internet Explorer gained almost 1% for a 54% market share, taking it to a 6 month high. As for Firefox, it suffered a drop in around 0.5% to 20.5%. Actually, this drop is the worst that the browser has been for the last 3 years. Google’s Chrome fell to 18.5%, and Apple’s Safari lost 0.2% to 5%. My favourite Opera, by the way, also lost 0.09% to 1.62%.

Meanwhile, these results fly in the face of previous announcements from Internet analysts who claimed that Google’s Chrome had overtaken Internet Explorer for the first time ever in March 2012. Today’s statistics measures raw pageviews, without taking into account corrections for pre-rendering, or counting unique visitors to a page.

It reveals that Internet Explorer 9 has gained 2.6% of share in the last month, while its 8 version fell by
almost the same amount, dropping by 2.2%. Edition 7 dropped a fraction, down 0.1%, and the much maligned Explorer 6, which even its developer wants dead, picked up over 0.5%. This means that users of IE 8 are switching to IE 9 with 34.5% of Windows 7 users choosing the new browser.

Bill Gates’ software giant has been promoting IE 9, suggesting that users should give it a second chance. The company has been moving users of IE 7 and 8 onto the latest version through automatic updates.

As for Google’s Chrome, it appears to be doing well, while Firefox continues to have a large number of users on edition 3.6 and below, who aren’t upgrading.

Google Offers $1 Million Reward For Hacking Their ‘Chrome’ Browser

For the last three years, Google’s Chrome browser has left the world’s premiere hacking competition unscathed, even as Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari have all been taken down by the assembled security researchers. So this year, Google is offering hackers a million reasons to re-focus their efforts.

Google has today announced that it’s putting up a bounty of $1 Million for anyone who can hack its Chrome browser and pinpointing vulnerabilities within it.

The competition called Pwnium will take place at this years CanSecWest security conference on March 7th. With prices totalling a million dollars, with prizes for $60,000, $40,000 and $20,000, for finding vulnerabilities in Chrome.

Pwnium is being organised by Google and is a splinter contest from the well known Pwn2Own hacking
contest. The competition will be run on a first come first serve basis and winners will also be given a tasty new Chromebook.

Google decided to launch its own contest this year due to the organisers of Pwn2Own, Tipping Point say that contestants do not need to reveal the techniques used to breach the browsers’ security. Google explains:

We will issue multiple rewards per category, up to the $1 million limit, on a first-come-first served basis. There is no splitting of winnings or “winner takes all.” We require each set of exploit bugs to be reliable, fully functional end to end, disjoint, of critical impact, present in the latest versions and genuinely “0-day,” i.e. not known to us or previously shared with third parties. Contestant’s exploits must be submitted to and judged by Google before being submitted anywhere else.

During previous Pwn2Own competitions Google’s Chrome browser has with stood the onslaught of hackers and come away without being hack for three years on the trot. Unlike other well known browser such as Safari, Firefox and Internet Explorer that have all been hacked each year.

For more information on the competition and prizes jump over to the Google Pwnium Blog post.

Wanted: Muslim, Dead or Alive! Very Dangerous

With all due respect this is to inform the whole world, that as it is a misconecption about muslims that muslims are spreading terror all over the world in the way of suicide bombing, which all of the non muslims has named as “JIHAD”, but i would like to make it very clear to all of you that islam is a religion of peace and it teaches the most peace full ways of living, ALLAH is most beloved to his creatures in this world even more then the love of 70 mothers and our beloved prophet HAZRAT MOHEMMED (S.A.W.) was the most loving & honest person which world has ever had, so how can be their followers could be terrorist.

In his time he has proved himself as an unrelentless person to every one, even with non muslims and he teaches the same to muslims to be so gratefull to all.

An insurrectionist who kills a noncombatent is a guilty to islam, any kind of violence is a capital offence in the islamic laws so surley one can say that any one who is responsible for killings of innocent people is not a muslim and has denied to the words of Quran which says:

“He who kills a man is the responsible for the killing of whole man kind”

So this proofs to all those non muslims who are unaware of Islamic laws that comitting suicide bombing and
spreading terror by killing innocent people is the denial of basic laws of Islam.

Offcourse there are some people using term of JIHAD for comitting these attacks but they are totaly unaware of the real soul of JIHAD and they are really abusing Islam by making this missperception that muslims are terrorist.

So, basically what I am trying to do by this letter is to reduce the stress among muslims and other religions and would love to clear that muslims are not terrorist.

So please in the name of these few unaweared muslims dont regard all the Muslims as terrorist.

Germany Called Google Chrome Most Secure Browser

The country’s state security experts claimed that Windows 7 users are recommended to use Chrome to surf the web. BSI (country’s Federal Office for Information Security) has published a security best practices guideline, where it mentioned Google Chrome as the best browser.
In the released advice, the BSI explained that the browser is regarded as the main component for the use of online services, and therefore is the key target for hacker attacks. Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security said that using Chrome coupled with some other measures can help users considerably reduce the risk of a successful cyber attack.
The BSI’s report mentioned Goggle Chrome’s anti-exploit sandbox technology for special praise, because this technology is able to isolate the browser from the operating system and the rest of the machine. In addition, the experts liked the browser’s update mechanism and method of bundling Adobe Flash.
This isn’t the first time the outfit issues recommendations for users. A couple years ago it demanded that Germans stopped using Internet Explorer and switched to another browser – Firefox. By the way, this move was credited with wiping out the dominance of the Internet Explorer in the European Union. Moreover, BSI recommended Adobe Reader X thanks to its sandbox system as well, and also encouraged users to choose Windows' Auto Update feature in order to keep their computers up to date with security fixes of the operating
system. The experts also approved Secunia’s Personal Software Inspector – a free utility able to scan a PC for outdated software and to point Internet users to appropriate downloads.

Currently Google Chrome accounts for only 14.3% of all browser market in Germany. Meanwhile, Firefox has 51%, and IE – 24.8%.
