Facebook Will Open US Private Messages to Politicians

Brain Hackers
It recently appeared that the world’s largest social network Facebook will provide detailed personal information to the political research organization called Politico in order to help politicians get elected. The announced cooperation will mean that political research outfit will be able to compile sentiment analysis reports along with voting-age user surveys. Both private status messages and comments of the network’s American users will be sent to the outfit, which will analyze the data for political content and spit it out into stories like the ones appearing in newspapers from time to time.

Meanwhile, Facebook and the political research outfit promise that the entire process will be automated, so no social network employee could read the private posts and comments. However, each public and private message mentioning any name of presidential candidate will be fed through a sentiment analysis instrument which will then spits out somehow anonymized measures of the general population of American Facebook. In short words, the process will
resemble the way the giant of web search Google usually runs reports on search trends based on engine’s users’ aggregate search activities.

At the moment, it is unclear how any personal comment can be sufficiently anonymous. That’s why industry experts criticize this decision. At the same time, they recommend every Facebook user who wants to really stuff things up to write all their messages in such a way that a machine was unable to work out their real meaning. For instance, the best recommendations were to stick the names of both rivals in equal numbers, as this is expected to annoy the bean counters.

Google Refused to Protect Indian Politicians

Brain Hackers
India is going to drag the key players of the web industry into court, accusing them of failing to protect its corrupt politicians from being discussed on the Internet.

The Indian government has been angry that people don’t show enough respect on the Internet and wants to make it possible to filter all posts they do not like. They especially didn’t like that people were criticizing the fact that the Ghandi family was getting political jobs only because of their name, rather than experience. As a result, the Indian government told Google and Facebook to filter the web. If the web giants do it under some sort of industry agreement, people wouldn’t say that the largest democracy in the world does it.

Unsurprisingly enough, Google and Facebook have told the Asian politicians that the web is actually too big for them to filter. So India has bought charges against two online giants and 19 other companies. As a result, a lower court has required the Internet companies to filter objectionable content. Of course, all Internet outfits are currently appealing that ruling. Both Facebook and Google explained in the court that they couldn’t block offensive material that might appear on their services from time to time. Facebook and Google are only two out of 21 outfits that have been demanded to develop some tool to block objectionable content in the country.

In fact, the entire situation comes down to a new legislation drafted by the government in 2011, which makes
entities responsible for user material posted on their services, demanding them to take it offline within 36 hours after receiving a complaint. According to media reports, journalist Vinay Rai has bought the case against 21 social networking services for displaying pictures considered offensive to Christians, Hindus, and Muslims.

While the government claimed it was all about keeping the different religious groups in the country away from each other, industry observers regard it as a fairly blatant attempt to stop Internet users discussing corruption, bribery and nepotism. Apparently, civil rights groups oppose the suggested legislation and both online giants have previously claimed they couldn’t and wouldn’t filter Internet content in India. Google’s lawyers explained that if they start using blocks on such words as “sex”, it will lead to the situation where the system ends up cutting government documents, including voter ID lists or passports, because they also include the word “sex”.

Chinese Online Population Grew

Brain Hackers
It appeared that the country’s Internet population exceeded the 500 million mark by the end of last year. The government-sponsored China Internet Network Information Center has recently calculated some statistics, according to which China added around 28,000,000 new Internet users during the second half of 2011.
In other words, at the end of December 2011, China could boast 513 million Internet users. It means that over 38.3% of the country population already had a connection to the Internet, which is up 4% from last year. Meanwhile, the number of people accessing the worldwide web from their mobile devices has also increased, reaching the mark of 355 million users. Currently, 69.3% of the country’s Internet users connect through their handsets, and this number is also up from 66.2% in 2010.

At the same time, the number of Chinese users connecting to the web through their desktops has dropped to 73.4%, but the number of Internet users accessing the web from their laptops has remained steady at
46.8%. Meanwhile, it has been emphasized that the overall Internet growth in the country has actually been slowing down. The industry experts believe this is because most Chinese citizens within the 10 to 29 year old age range already have access to the Internet, while older people are less likely to express much interest in it.

At the moment, the most popular activities of the Chinese users on the Internet include instant messaging, using search engines, and listening to online music. Indeed, the observers point out that microblogs have been growing rapidly – for instance, their numbers have already reached 250 million users, which is almost 4 times up from 63 million in 2010.

Israeli Hackers Attack Saudi and UAE Stock Exchange Websites

Brain Hackers
The tensions in the Middle East have grown to other spheres too. Now cyberspace is also treated as any other space owned by a country. According to the Israeli newspaper, Haaretz, a group calling itself IDF-Team had shut down Saudi Arabia’s and the UAE’s stock exchange websites. These websites were hacked on Tuesday and caused paralysis and delays in these two stock exchanges’ websites.

The attack however was in retaliation to a Saudi hackers’ group called “Nightmare group” that shut down Tel Aviv stock exchange and Israeli airline El Al’s websites. These incidents have initiated a whole ongoing cyber-warfare between Israeli and Arab hackers who have been hacking and releasing Facebook data and email account information since the past couple of weeks. This hacked information is under threat to be
released to the masses causing further damage.

Already the tensions on the grounds are hard to handle and every effort to resolve issues between Arabs and Israelis seem to go wasted when such things happen. It is better that the governments take notice of such cyber-attacks and implement action preventing spilling of warfare into new spheres. Hacking is one the biggest cyber-attacks that could happen and spilling of information can help to promote the propaganda of the side having an upper hand.

Israel Attacked by Hackers

Brain Hackers
Regardless of all worries of the country, the only thing getting blown up in a so-called “cyber war” that has erupted in Israel seems to be a sense of all proportion.
Cyber intruders have somehow disrupted access to the official sites of the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (known as TASE) and the country’s largest carrier El Al Airlines. For some reason, the latter panicked and issued a response which became a string of over the top statements from the company’s press office: it claimed that Israel was involved in a cyber war!

El Al Airlines has announced in its statement that the country has been attacked in a kind of a “cyber war” within the last couple weeks. Nobody knows why, but the company claimed that the attacks had come from Saudi Arabia. The facts are that the website of El Al Airlines crashed, and it said the company has been busy trying to solve the problem. Aside from the airline, another organization complained about hacker attack: the stock exchange also said that it experienced cyber attack
on the access routes to its site. In the interview, deputy manager of the exchange’s marketing and communications unit explained that the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange’s trading activities are currently operating normally.

Meanwhile, the intruder in question is suspected to be the same individual who recently published thousands of personal credit card details of the Israel citizens, that has been gleaned from commercial sites during the worst case of mass cyber identity theft that Israel had even seen. Although the intruder claimed to reside in Saudi Arabia, a number of security experts still claim that the hacker was from South America. Up to date, no individual or hacker group has claimed responsibility for these cyber attacks, so it might be not the same person. Nevertheless, this hasn’t stopped El Al Airlines bumping up the “cyber war” rhetoric.

Although the government of the attacked country has already threatened to respond militarily to defend its online structures, attacking Saudi schools from air when the hacker might be in Brazil could be a bit over the top. In addition, Israel forgets that there were only three minor hacks. Still, it set up an agency to address cyber attacks earlier in January, whose founding member explained that Israeli most vital systems had already been protected, but the hacker attacks were likely to increase.

US threatens Wikipedia

Brain Hackers
The free online encyclopedia website, Wikipedia, has blacked out as part of a global protest against anti-piracy legislation making its way through the US congress.

On its English homepage, Wikipedia, a primary research tool on the Internet and one of the most frequently visited websites, says, “Right now, the US congress is considering legislation that could fatally damage the free and open Internet. For 24 hours, to raise awareness, we are blacking out Wikipedia.”

“This is an extraordinary action for our community to take,” Wikipedia’s founder Jimmy Wales said about the blackout of Wikipedia’s English version.

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) are currently under review by the US House of Representatives and the Senate.

“We simply cannot ignore the fact that SOPA and PIPA endanger free speech both in the United States and abroad, and set a frightening precedent of Internet censorship for the world,” said Wales.

Internet giant Google has also covered its logo in black despite being available for searches. Other popular websites are also protesting against the legislation, including Reddit, which said it will be blacked out
for 12 hours.

The protesting sites say they intend to ‘shutter and silence’ the Internet the same way many in the tech world say will happen if the Stop Online Piracy Act in the House and the Protect IP Act in the Senate move forward.

The two bills are claimed to be aimed at hindering the illegal downloading of movies and TV shows.

However, Wikipedia and other Internet giants such as Google, Twitter and Yahoo say the two bills would give the US government the power to censor the web as they would let federal authorities shut down sites on the Internet without adequate processing and would essentially change the platform of free speech that the Internet provides.

Israel seeks revenge for hacking

Brain Hackers
The Israeli government has threatened to retaliate against the hacker who last week published the credit card details of thousands of Israelis, with one senior official comparing the cyberattack to a “terrorist operation”.

Danny Ayalon, the deputy foreign minister, warned that the attack represented “a breach of sovereignty comparable to a terrorist operation, and must be treated as such”. He added: “Israel has active capabilities for striking at those who are trying to harm it, and no agency or hacker will be immune from retaliatory action.”

A Saudi-based hacker calling himself 0xOmar last week revealed several batches of credit card details affecting at least 14,000 Israeli cardholders. The hacker claimed to have access to a far greater trove of personal information, warning at first that he had uncovered the credit card details of about 400,000
Israelis. He later claimed to possess personal information about no fewer than 1.1m Israelis – a boast that is being treated with caution by Israeli officials.

Israeli credit card companies have said there is so far little sign of financial damage as a result of the hacking attack. However, on Sunday Israeli media reported the arrest of an 18-year-old Israeli man who used the leaked credit card information to buy, among other things, a Galaxy smartphone and a tablet computer.

Israeli officials say they are not certain the hacker is indeed based in Saudi Arabia, and whether he is acting alone or as part of a group.

Yedioth Ahronoth, the Israeli daily, published what it claimed was an email exchange with 0xOmar on Friday. In it, the hacker insists that his attack was politically motivated, accusing Israel of “genocide” and of breaking “legal international rules”. He adds: “I want to harm Israel financially and socially.”

Cyber attacks have become a source of growing concern in Israel, prompting the government to set up a National Cyber Directorate last year. The directorate is responsible for shoring up the country’s defences against cyber attacks, but is also supposed to help Israeli companies that specialise in cyber security.

Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister, said at the time that Israel should be “in the vanguard of the cyber field around the world”. Aside from the security aspect, he said, there was “great economic opportunity here”.

The websites of the Bank of Israel and of Tel Aviv municipality have been targets for politically motivated hacking attacks in recent years. Last November, the websites of the Israeli army, the Mossad spy agency and the Shin Bet internal security service all crashed simultaneously. Israeli officials said the failure was not due to a hacking attack.

The denial came despite a threat only days earlier by Anonymous, the group of hackers and online activists, warning of an impending cyberattack against Israel.

Hackers Stole Symantec Code

Brain Hackers
It seems that Symantec is really regretting that it allowed the Indian government covert or overt access to the company’s source code. According to media reports, a number of hackers have accessed the source code regarding Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 and Symantec Antivirus 10.2 located on the Indian military intelligence servers.
It is still unclear how the Indian Secret Service received the source code – the suspicions are that they simply handed the code over for testing before being offered a lucrative government contract. According to the hacker group called Dharmaraja, within the Indian Spy Program there are source codes of a dozen software firms that have signed agreements with the country’s TANCS program and CBI. The intruders have shown a document from 1999, showing that Symantec describes as defining the app programming interface for the virus Definition Generation Service.

Meanwhile, senior manager of corporate communication for Symantec told the press that although this can explain how the software was developed to work and contains function names, it didn’t have actual source
code present. Nevertheless, one of the posts includes a pile of file names reputedly contained within Norton AntiVirus source code package. Although the company claimed it was still analyzing the information, it really looks like the source code has been pinched.

The experts believe that hackers can learn little from the code, since most of the anti-virus product is usually based on attack signatures, so virus creators have to continuously write malware to evade signature detection. The intruders could use the source code to search out and exploit holes in the software, but that would be a bit trickier.

Israel Compared Hacking to Terrorism

Brain Hackers
Israel has claimed that it would respond with military force if any Israeli company is hacked. The country has announced that it would really respond to online attacks in the same way Israel responds to violent terrorist acts.
In other words, if Anonymous decides to hit an Israeli company, the group might expect the country’s commandos to parachute into the area they reside and hit the local school with white phosphorous grenades before buggering off. Or, in other case, the hackers could wake up one morning with their house being surrounded by a large wall, with the police at the gate not allowing them go to work in the morning.

It all happened because of a hacker named OxOmar. He claimed to be Saudi and announced a week ago that he had leaked the private data on 6,000 Israeli credit cards. As a result, the Israelis should have already been training to parachute into Saudi, but it suddenly appeared that OxOmar is just a 19-year-old Mexican guy. While Danny Ayalon, the country’s Deputy Foreign Minister, admitted that they knew OxOmar was residing in Mexico, the authorities hadn’t approached Mexican police to ask for help. Perhaps, they decided that those might have a lot of work with drugs barons cutting people’s heads off to be worried that much about
Israeli credit cards. In fact, they are right.

Nevertheless, Ayalon claimed that hacker attacks are a breach of sovereignty which can be compared to a terrorist operation, and therefore should be treated accordingly. The country, indeed, has active capabilities for striking at people trying to harm it, so no group or individual will be immune from retaliatory action. If you want to try your luck in Israel after this – you are welcome…

Apple Punished For Secrecy

Brain Hackers
An American judge told Apple that its cult of secrecy won’t dictate the workings of the American justice system.Indeed, it is clear that the company has two types of truth: one of them is marketed truth and the other one is secret truth. The first one is plugged into Apple reality distortion field and is able to convert gadgets into the real saviours of mankind. Meanwhile, the second one is never discussed outside the company offices.

According to media reports, Apple logically believed that the American justice system would work just as its briefs told Judge William Alsup during a court hearing in the case that the company needs to keep some information about its MacOS secret. Apple was a little shocked when the judge refused to accept its version of reality and wondered why the papers should be secret. The company replied that it was a trade secret, which could give its competitors an advantage in case of being made public. However, the judge pointed out that the documents were already public and could be downloaded from the web, while the company wasn’t claiming that the data had been misappropriated.

Apple kept insisting that since it wasn’t the source of the data located online, the papers were a trade secret
and should be protected from a disclosure which had already happened. In other words, if anyone ever has a scoop on the company which hasn’t got the blessing from the press office, their story might also be a considered a trade secret and they can be arrested for corporate spying.

However, the judge didn’t buy that. He claimed that the company wasn’t allowed to have this court seal data just to avoid confirmation that the publicly available sources got it correct. He pointed out that the data about the OS is currently available on the site of a book about the software, while Apple’s decryption key haiku is also available to any user able to compile and run publicly available code on a MacBook Air laptop.

Two years ago, Psystar was barred by the same judge from selling copies of Apple's OS or any products circumventing the technologies controlling access to the software, including Psystar software letting the users run the Mac OS on non-Apple devices. Back in 2009, the companies reached a $2.67 million partial settlement. Later, an appeal court in San Francisco upheld the judge’s sales injunction and ordered some papers in the case unsealed. That’s where Apple tried to get the decision reviewed.

what is Valantine's Day???

It’s that time of the year again where an annual ritual takes the world by frenzy, and sweeps along the Muslims with it. Now it’s the turn of Valentine’s Day.

It shouldn’t take too much to work out that Valentine’s Day has nothing to do with Islam, thereby it should also have nothing to do with Muslims. However, many a Muslim will be taking part in this festivity, which is steeped in illicit relationships, promotes such things and devalues the honour of men, women and families. You may think, that’s a very strong thing to say about something as harmless as remembering to be loving to your wife and making the day special for her. But if Muslims engage in festivities that are not Islamic in nature or origin, then this is a grave thing, as revealed in the Qur’an:

“And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers” [Surah Aal ‘Imraan, 3:85]

The Prophet (peace be upon him) warned us of our following the ways of the Jews and Christians and those
who came before us:

Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “You will certainly follow the ways of those who came before you, span by span, cubit by cubit, until even if they were to enter a lizard’s hole, you would follow them.” We said, “O Messenger of Allaah, (do you mean) the Jews and Christians?” He said, “Who else?!” [Sahih Bukhari]

THE STORY OF THE FESTIVAL OF LOVE (Valentine’s Day)

The Festival of Love was one of the festivals of the pagan Romans, when paganism was the prevalent religion of the Romans more than seventeen centuries ago. In the pagan Roman concept, it was an expression of “spiritual love”. There were myths associated with this pagan festival of the Romans, which persisted with their Christian heirs. Among the most famous of these myths was the Roman belief that Romulus, the founder of Rome, was suckled one day by a she-wolf, which gave him strength and wisdom.

The Romans used to celebrate this event in mid-February each year with a big festival. One of the rituals of this festival was the sacrifice of a dog and a goat. Two strong and muscular youths would daub the blood of the dog and goat onto their bodies, then they would wash the blood away with milk. After that there would be
a great parade, with these two youths at its head, which would go about the streets. The two youths would have pieces of leather with which they would hit everyone who crossed their path. The Roman women would welcome these blows, because they believed that they could prevent or cure infertility.

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN SAINT VALENTINE AND THIS FESTIVAL

Saint Valentine is a name which is given to two of the ancient “martyrs” of the Christian Church. It was said that there were two of them, or that there was only one, who died in Rome as the result of the persecution of the Gothic leader Claudius, c. 296 CE. In 350 CE, a church was built in Rome on the site of the place where he died, to perpetuate his memory. When the Romans embraced Christianity, they continued to celebrate the Feast of Love mentioned above, but they changed it from the pagan concept of “spiritual love” to another concept known as the “martyrs of love”, represented by Saint Valentine who had advocated love and peace, for which cause he was martyred, according to their claims. It was also called the Feast of Lovers, and Saint Valentine was considered to be the patron saint of LOVERS.

One of their false beliefs connected with this festival was that the names of girls who had reached marriageable age would be written on small rolls of paper and placed in a dish on a table. Then the young men who wanted to get married would be called, and each of them would pick a piece of paper. He would put himself at the service of the girl whose name he had drawn for one year, so that they could find out about one another. Then they would get married, or they would repeat the same process again on the day of the festival
in the following year.

The Christian clergy reacted against this tradition, which they considered to have a corrupting influence on the morals of young men and women. It was abolished in Italy, where it had been well-known, then it was revived in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when in some western countries there appeared shops which sold small books called “Valentine’s books”, which contained love poems, from which the one who wanted to send a greeting to his sweetheart could choose. They also contained suggestions for writing love letters.

It was also said concerning the origins of this holiday that when the Romans became Christian, after Christianity had become widespread, the Roman emperor Claudius II decreed in the third century CE that soldiers should not get married, because marriage would distract them from the wars they used to fight. This decree was opposed by Saint Valentine, who started to perform marriages for the soldiers in secret. When the emperor found out about that, he threw him in jail and sentenced him to execution. In prison, he (Saint Valentine) fell in love with the jailer’s daughter, but this was a secret because according to Christian laws, priests and monks were forbidden to marry or fall in love. But he is still regarded highly by the Christians because of his steadfastness in adhering to Christianity when the emperor offered to pardon him if he forsook Christianity and worshipped the Roman gods; then he would be one of his closest confidantes and he would make him his son-in-law. But Valentine refused this offer and preferred Christianity, so he was executed on 14 February 270 CE, on the eve of February 15, the festival of Lupercalis. So this day was named for this saint.
In The Story of Civilisation, it says that the Church devised a calendar in which every day was designated as the feast day of one of the saints. In England, Saint Valentine’s Day was to come at the end of winter. When that day came, according to them, the birds mated enthusiastically in the forests, and the young men would put flowers on the windowsills of the homes of the girls whom they loved. (The Story of Civilization by Will Durant, 15/23). The Pope designated the day of the death of Saint Valentine, February 14, 270 CE, as a festival of love.

MUSLIMS, DISTANCE YOURSELF FROM VALENTINE’S DAY

From the above, we can see many religious reasons why taking part in Valentine’s Day is at odds with Islam. The Day itself has roots in paganism and we have been instructed to not follow the rituals and ways of the Jews and the Christians.

Remember, we are Muslims and we distinguish ourselves as being Muslims and following Islam. There is no need to follow the tradition of another religion or pagan ritual, especially if we have been Commanded by Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) not to. Allah Has Prescribed for us the festivities we should follow and there is no need to add to this by following something else.

Muslims are not Christians, pagans, jews, buddhists, hindus, sikhs, atheists or belonging to any other religion or way of life. Muslims are Muslims and follow Islam. By celebrating Valentine’s Day, you are actually following something else. And this undermines the strength of the Ummah. This is one of the reasons why the Ummah is weak – we do not adhere to Islam and only Islam. There is nothing wrong with saying that you are
a Muslim and so do not celebrate Valentine’s Day. Non-Muslims respect this but it seems that Muslims do not want to feel like they are upsetting others.

Veena Malik Signs British Film: Indian Media

Veena Malik, an actor who has never failed to attract media limelight, has revealed that she has signed a British film in which she has a “powerful role”, Times of India reported on Monday.

“I am getting many offers from across the globe. Recently, a UK film team was in Dubai and I was shortlisting a few offers that would suit me. I have zeroed in on a few fashion projects and a film. I can’t reveal more at the moment,” Malik was quoted as saying.

The report said that the filmmakers in India working with Malik are already “crying foul” over her films falling behind schedule, but the actor has promised to honour all her commitments.

The director of Malik’s new film Mumbai 125km, Hemant Madhukar, had reportedly said that Malik has millions of rupees riding on her and she is yet to shoot the climax of his thriller, which is expected to hit
screens later this year.

“All my producers and directors are well aware of my schedule and I will not let anyone down. I am the leading lady and I am sure there are crores and crores riding on me,” she told the newspaper.

Hackers Compromised Intelligence Mail

A hacker group, allegedly connected to Anonymous, has recently cracked the American and British intelligence PCs and has published the email addresses of over 200 British military staff and almost 250 NATO officials.
The Internet saw a leak of thousands of UK email addresses and encrypted passwords. Information of defence, MI6 intelligence, police, politicians, and NATO advisers has been published online for everyone to see. The list of exposed people includes advisers to the Joint Intelligence Organization, acting as the prime minister’s eyes and ears on sensitive data. Unfortunately, they never thought of hacking David Cameron’s iPad which is assumed to have all the updated data about what was going in the United Kingdom without much in the way of security protection.

However, they chose instead to take out Stratfor, a consultancy located in Texas, specializing in foreign affairs and security. Its database contained user IDs, email addresses and encrypted passwords of around 850,000
people who had subscribed to Stratfor’s site. Around 75,000 paying subscribers also saw their credit card numbers and addresses compromised, 462 of them being British accounts.

Meanwhile, security experts explained that in the information one could identify the details of hundreds of British government officials, some of them working in sensitive areas. Actually, the passwords appeared to be encrypted in code that could quickly be cracked by some off-the-shelf software.

All in all, the database contains around 19,000 email addresses of the .mil domain of the American military. This number included 173 people deployed in Afghanistan and around 170 in Iraq. For example, the leaked emails contained personal information from former vice-president Dan Quayle and former secretary of state Henry Kissinger. Besides, 7 officials in the Cabinet Office of the United Kingdom have had their information exposed, as well as 45 Foreign Office officials, 14 Home Office officials, 67 Scotland Yard and other police officials. Even a couple of employees within the royal household were compromised, too! Meanwhile, none of the 23 individuals in the houses of parliament, including Jeremy Corbyn, Lady Nicholson and Lord Roper, had any idea that they had been hacked.

US Demanded Spain to Adopt SOPA Policy

The United States of America told Spain that if it doesn’t introduce legislation similar to SOPA, it will face a trade blacklist. Currently the SOPA bill is being pushed through in the United States by a number of lawmakers depending on campaign donations from different members of the entertainment industry.
American authorities have been demanding other states to introduce similar police-state style acts. According to the media reports, some leaked letter sent to Spain’s outgoing President by the American ambassador to the country contained a warning that unless passing SOPA-style censorship legislation, the country risked being put on a US trade blacklist. And it looks like the warning worked, because the new Spanish government is currently working with the United States to hand over its legal system to the entertainment industry so they are able to lock up who and when they like. It was a kind of days of Franco, but in this case there was no civil war to remove human rights in Spain first.

A Wikileaks cable has recently revealed the America’s heavy handed treatment of an EU member. That’s where a controversial draft of a new Spanish copyright law was proved to have been written by the United
States. One more diplomatic leak has shown how the United States was furious that Spanish President Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapaterowas wasn’t planning to pass the America-drafted Sinde (website filtering) legislation before leaving office.

The letter was signed by the ambassador of the United States Alan D. Solomont and addressed to the Spanish Prime Minister's office. It has shown that the United States was expressing deep concern over the failure to introduce the SOPA-style filtering legislation. There, Solomont claimed that the authorities failed to finish this work for some political reasons and to the detriment of the reputation and economy of the country. Actually, it wasn’t Solomont’s fault in the last days of the office, as he tried.

Meanwhile, the incoming Partido Popular (translated as People’s Party) was instantly pressured by the United States to introduce the law and bring it in within ten days of taking office. As a result, Spain is broke easily succumbed to the threat of trade retaliation from the United States.

Internet Father Said Web Wasn’t a Human Right

Vint Cerf, also known as the Father of the Internet, since he was a program manager for the US Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency while it has been developing TCP/IP, claimed that the web wasn’t a human right. Thus, he agrees with the US government that believes that the web is all right if the users aren’t pirating copyrighted content.
Vint Cerf explained that the recent Arab Spring demonstrations thrived thanks to thousands of people who managed to participate, which they could have never done without the ability that the web offers. Cerf also dismissed courts and parliaments in such states as France and Estonia that have pronounced online access a human right, claiming that while such things were well meaning they missed a true point of technology: it is an enabler of rights, not a right itself.

Cerf believes that there was a high bar for something to be called a human right. For example, people have to deal with things like freedom from torture and that of conscience before getting to things like access to the web. That’s why putting technology into this exalted category complicates things. Indeed, it’ easier to talk about critical freedoms like freedom of speech and that of access to data which don’t have to be bound to any specific technology.

Vint Cerf believes that access to the web is simply an instrument for obtaining something more important
. For instance, people don’t talk about a “right” to a phone, even if it regards the idea of “universal service”. Meanwhile, the Internet has granted a very accessible and egalitarian platform for creating, sharing and obtaining data on a global scale. As a result, people have new ways to exercise their rights.

The web should be regarded as an instrument to improve the human condition, while appreciating the human rights that deserve protection. However, people shouldn’t pretend that access itself is a right of that kind. Although it sounds OK, in fact Cerf means that a digital divide is acceptable, since people with technology are working to make life better for others.

In response, Sir Tim Berners-Lee claimed that people have become so reliant on the Internet that it should really be a right to have access to it. Although it is possible to live without the Internet, the difference between people having connection to it and those who don’t is growing bigger. Experts believe that now it has reached a point where Internet use is a basic human right.
