Internet Explorer 9 is Now Available

On March 14, 2011 Microsoft officially released Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) to the general public.  Some of the new features of IE9 include support for HTML5 video and audio, CSS 3, embedded ICC color profiles improved JavaScript performance, and the Web Open Font Format.  Other features include, hardware-accelerated graphics, video, and text rendering.

Some of the new user interface enhancements include:

    * A compact user interface.
    * Pinned Sites: Integrates with the Windows 7 taskbar to make web site experience more like an application.
    * Security-enabled Download Manager: File transfers and can pause and resume downloads and alerts if a file may be malicious.

    * Enhanced Tabs: the new tab page can show most visited sites.
    * Add-on Performance Advisor: Shows add-ons that may be slowing down the browser's performance, and allows them to be disabled or removed.

IE9 will only be available for Windows 7, Vista, and Server 2008 (for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions).

StrongVPN: Extra Security and Other Features

I recently learned about a service called StrongVPN that provides a few features I really like. I am not personally endorsing this company or its products.  Although, I would suggest investigating their service offerings to see if you like their features.

1 Extra Security: A VPN service can provide you an extra layer of security when surfing
the web, or logging into a public hot spot.  All the traffic is generally encrypted between
you and the VPN provider.  This makes it difficult for an attacker to steal your data while
you're using a public hot spot.
2 Surfing Privately: When using a VPN service can provide you an extra layer of
privacy, by hiding your true IP address from web sites. Companies mine IP address
information to track your web surfing habits.

3 Overseas Web Sites: One of the unique features of StrongVPN is that they allow you to
have an American IP address.  So when traveling overseas you can get access to American
that otherwise could be blocked.  This feature also applies to other countries
           they support (more information).

Microsoft Fix It LIve

A new feature of the Microsoft Knowledge Base system is called "Fix it live". Basically its a service from Microsoft that will attempt to fix certain problems outlined in the knowledge base articles.

Here is excerpt from the site: "Have you ever come across a Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article or been presented with a Windows Error Reporting (WER) solution and asked yourself, why can't Microsoft just fix this for me? Today KB articles and WER solutions provide you with a list of steps that can be followed to resolve your issue. However, tomorrow looks much different and we hope it helps ...

you resolve any issues you have with our products faster and easier."

Software: VIPRE PC Rescue Program

The VIPRE PC Rescue Program is a free command-line utility that can scan and help clean an infected computer. This is not a real-time scanner so it won't protect you from being infected in the first place.

These types of programs are great for trying to disinfect an infected computer, or just you give you a second opinion to make sure its not.

The VIPRE PC Rescue Program is a self-extracting executable file that contains the virus scanner and definitions. There is no pretty graphical interface that makes this program easy to use.

So to use this tool it helps to be familiar with the basic concepts of using other command-line based utilities.

Software: Great Silverlight Demo

I have talked about Microsoft's Silverlight in the past, but I have not seen many good demonstrations of the technology until now. Check out the Hard Rock Cafe's memorabilia section of their site. Using a feature called 'deep zoom' you can do perform some close examination the different objects in the collection.

To access the site you will need to install SilverLight Beta 2 (you will be prompted when you visit the page), but in my opinion its work the install. I was very impress with the controls and the detail of the objects that you can see. It's important to note that the scroll wheel allows you to increase or decrease the magnification of what you're looking at.

Note: If the site doesn't work after you install the plug-in close your browser, and open it back up again.

How to enable the DVD Library in Windows Media Center

Microsoft has posted a knowledge base article on how to enable the DVD Library feature on a Windows Vista based Media Center. This feature is enabled by default in Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. The DVD content is stored on the hard disk, and appears in the My Videos folder.

On Windows Vista-based Media Centers content is displayed in a DVD gallery. However, the DVD Library is not automatically enabled in Windows Media Center on a Windows Vista-based computer. This feature should allow you to play your commercial DVDs from the hard drive.

Software: Virtual Desktops

Microsoft's Sysinternals group has release a new utility called 'Desktops', which is a virtual desktop manager. Basically, it allows you to have several applications open, and assign them to different virtual desktops.

So for example, let say that you have eight different programs open, but they can be grouped into 4 different categories. You can assign related application windows to different virtual desktops. So when you switch to that desktop, those application windows will be visible to you.

The advantage to using a program like this is that it allows you to organize your application windows. You can also assign hot-keys, or you can use the icon in the Notification area to switch between desktops.

Windows Vista: Creating Shutdown/Restart Shortcuts

Want to create a quick and easy to way restart or shutdown Vista from an icon in your desktop, quick launch bar or your Start menu? Follow the instructions below.

    * Right-click an empty area on your desktop and select New > Shortcut.
    * In the field labeled 'Type the location of the item,' type: shutdown.exe /s /t 00 (note: those are zeros, and not 'O's). You can also use the command shutdown.exe /r /t 00 to restart your computer instead of shutting it down.
    * Press the Next button, then give your shortcut a name (i.e.: Shut Down), then Press the Finish button
    * Optional: if want a different icon image. Right-click the new item you ....
just created, then click the Shortcut tab and press the Change Icon button to select a different image to display.

Re-Activating the Built-in Administrator Account

In previous versions of Windows the built-in Administrator account was enabled default (this was before Vista). This was a major security risk because hackers knew which they account they needed to attack to get complete access to the computer.

In Vista if you do a clean install (not an upgrade), this account has been disabled by default. If for some reason you need to reactivate this account (which I recommend against unless there is a good reason) the instructions are below:

    * Log on to the machine with a local administrator account (if you don't have one already then these instructions will not work for you).
    * In the Search field under the Start menu type MMC.EXE and press the Enter key. Press Continue button in the UAC prompt to open the console.
    * From the File menu, select "Add/Remove Snap-in".
    * In the "Available Snap-ins" list on the left, scroll down and select "Local Users and Groups", then press the Add button.
    * In the "Choose Target Machine" dialog box, select "Local Computer" press the Finish button, then press the OK button.

    * Expand the "Local Users and Groups" icon in the left pane and click the Users folder.
    * In the right pane, right-click Administrator account and select Properties
    * In the General tab, uncheck "Account is disabled" box, then press the OK button.

Stop Security Center From Nagging You

Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) added the Security Center, which centralize most security-related functions to one control panel. By default, if it finds a problem it will start nagging you to fix it. For example, if you turned off automatic updates or it doesn't recognize your anti-virus application. Here is how to turn off this feature:

    * Open the Control Panel folder
    * Open the Security Center control panel
    * In the left pane, click the link labeled "Change the way Security Center alerts me"
    * Uncheck the item(s) that it's complaining about (i.e.: firewall, automatic updates, or virus protection)
    * Press the OK button.

Understanding the Facebook “Find out who views your profile” scam

OpenDNS Blog reports: "Every few weeks there’s a new scam that makes the rounds
on Facebook. This week it’s the “Find out who visits your profile,” scam, which we’ve
all seen before. The reason it piques my interest this time is the sheer volume of people
falling victim. That coupled with the fact that the victims include some of my more tech-savvy
Facebook friends made me want to understand better what exactly the virus is trying to do
and how we can all protect ourselves.

The virus works first by gaining access to your Facebook account. Unlike other methods
for hacking, which involve somehow accessing your login credentials, this scam needs only
for you to click a link posted on your wall or someone else’s wall.
To entice you into clicking,
the scam offers something lots of people would love to know, but Facebook doesn’t allow:
a list of people who’ve viewed your profile. You might receive an e-mail notification that tells
you a friend has posted a link on your wall with this context:"

Apple WWDC 2011 to Convene in San Francisco: 10 Things to Look for

eWeek.com reports: "Apple is planning to hold its Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco starting on June 6. The company will also be holding its annual keynote address where, historically, Apple CEO Steve Jobs has talked about updates to software and new versions of the company’s iPhone. However, recent rumors suggest iPhone news won’t be prominent at the event this year, and those in attendance will sit through discussions on software, including iOS 5 and Apple’s upcoming desktop-based operating system, Mac OS X Lion."

Apple`s iCloud Offers Amazon, Google Competition

eWeek.com reports: "Apple CEO Steve Jobs and his executives whipped the curtain back from the long-rumored iCloud during the June 6 kickoff of the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference. The free service will sync user content and push it to various devices via the cloud. It is integrated with apps, ensuring automatic updates, and it will keep folders automatically updated. In Apple’s new world, contacts, calendar and mail are now cloud-centric features, with new messages and updates pushed to associated devices. In addition to productivity features such as email, iCloud will also serve as an online repository/syncing tool for users’ documents, photos and music."

Apple Should Release the iPhone 5 in 2012: 10 Reasons Why?

eWeek.com reports: "Each year at the Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple takes the opportunity to talk about its next iPhone. And in June, another WWDC will be held in San Francisco. So far, Apple has only said that it plans to discuss Mac OS X 'Lion' and the future of its iOS platform. Other than that, talk that the iPhone 5 will come up is only speculation. Exactly what Steve Jobs and Company have planned right now is unknown. Chances are that the iPhone 5 will be put on display, given its history. But for the rest of the year, it would be best if Apple didn’t unveil the iPhone 5. The smarter move for the company would be to focus its efforts elsewhere this year and release the iPhone 5 in 2012."

10 iPhone Apps to Jump Start Your IT Job Hunt

eWeek.com reports: "As the U.S. job market continues to show slow signs of improvement—the economy added 192,000 jobs in February and the unemployment rate dropped to 8.9 percent, according to the latest numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics—now might be the time to start thinking about your IT career and where you stand in the labor market. Thankfully, Apple’s App Store offers a wide range of applications designed to give you a leg up in determining your options."

Apple iPhone 5 Design: 10 Hot Features We Expect to See

eWeek reports: "Apple and Verizon Wireless offered another sweet piece of the Apple mobile pie when they announced the iPhone 4 would be coming to the Verizon network Feb. 10. But iPhone fans are already counting down the days to the usual June unveiling of the next-generation iPhone. No official details are available yet, though media reports are beginning to zero in on some of the features the new device and platform are expected to have. One item we believe you can count on as sure as the night is dark is that the next iPhone will include Near-Field Communication capabilities. NFC is the short-range wireless communications technology that enables wireless phones to communicate with sensors in posters, signs and even point-of-sale contact terminals....

In other words, such technology will make the iPhone an electronic wallet. Expect the iPhone 5 to include a chip and for iOS5 to include an NFC controller software stack homegrown and patented by Apple. But there will be more, lots more. In this slide show, eWEEK speculates on a bunch of other new features for the iPhone 5 this summer."

Verizon iPhone 4 Teardown Hints at Apple's Future

eWeek reports: "Teardowns of the Verizon Wireless iPhone 4 by repair site iFixit and analyst
firm IHS iSuppli revealed that, while on the surface they appeared largely identical, Apple has
done quite a bit of work on a phone that, in a matter of months, is 'set to be antiquated by the
iPhone 5,' iFixit’s Kyle Wein wrote in a Feb. 7 report. Apple made changes to the phone’s
battery and vibrator, but most important are new design choices regarding the
Verizon iPhone’s CDMA technology and antenna, and the switch from a
Broadcom chip to a Qualcomm MDM chipset.
Such changes, wrote iSuppli senior analyst Wayne Lam, in a report the same day, 'likely foretell of future updates coming in the next major model release of the Apple iPhone later this year.'"

Apple iPad 2 Currently in Production

eWeek reports: "The company’s newest tablet will be “thinner and lighter than the first model,” unnamed sources told the Wall Street Journal Feb. 9. If the account is accurate, the next iPad will also include a front-facing camera for video conferencing, more memory, “and a more powerful graphics processor.” AT&T and Verizon, which currently offer the iPhone, will carry the device."

Cheaper, Smaller Apple iPhone Will Be A Cash Cow

eWeek reports: "Apple could be working on a new iPhone that would be smaller and cheaper than current versions of the device, according to recent reports from the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg. So far, Apple hasn’t confirmed that such a device is on track for shipment later this year, but some speculate that the device will cost half as much as current versions of Apple’s smartphone."

iPad 2 Leather Case Hands-on & Video!

M.I.C. Gadget reports: "Finally, we have some interesting updates for the much-rumoured iPad 2. Yup, we hope you enjoy the lengthy video above showing an in-depth examination of the iPad 2 leather case we got recently from a secret Asian case supplier, who does not wish his name to be written on our blog. So, the new iPad 2 leather case is indeed different. It does not fit our iPad, and we think it is designed for an iPad with tapered sides and a very flat back."

Microsoft makes OneNote free on the iPhone. Is iPad next?

ZDNet reports: "Starting today, in response to user requests, Microsoft is making OneNote Mobile for the iPhone available as a free download from the iTunes store, said Jason Bunge, Senior Director of Office Product Management. (I’m sure more than a few of the requests came from Microsoft employees with iPhones… but I digress.) The product will be free for a limited time period, the end date of which Microsoft is not specifying today."

Apple Software: All-in-1 Logic GameBox

I have a real bad habit of buying All-In-One applications.  Generally what you end up with is one application that has lots of half-baked programs.

I recently download All-in-1 Logic GameBox by AppZap.  I love logic games, and this is my favorite one so far.  The game has a clean interface, and most of the games are simple to understand and easy to use.

My only complaint, in the last update they took away the telescope game.  I hope they bring it back.

Version 1.5 includes eight games, with more than 2,000 levels:
Round Round!
Stickies!
Parking Lot
Labyrinth
Liquid Measure
Flip It
Arithmetic
Paratroopers

Article: Apple iPhone 4 Teardown

From eWeek: "Repair site iFixit, along with Chipworks, released a teardown of the Apple iPhone 4 June 23, a day before the device officially goes on sale. The site says it worked hard to get a hold of the iPhone 4—and wasn’t disappointed once it did, marveling at Apple’s treatment of the phone’s multiple antennas, its Gorilla Glass front display and the gyroscope Apple scooped up before anyone else. Other good news is that the iPhone 4 appears to be "tuned" to defer to the least-congested network band available to it—which is good news for AT&T and its customers in highly populated areas."

iPhone Apps for Black Friday Shopping Madness - Mobile and Wireless

eWeek reports: "No rest for the wicked, or American consumers, for that matter. While you should be spending the Friday morning after Thanksgiving sleeping off the unconscionable amount of turkey, pie and potatoes you've stuffed yourself with the day before, there's a good chance you'll instead be headed off to your local shopping mall or electronics superstore to get a head start on holiday gift-buying—not to mention to take advantage of the enticing Black Friday discounts. As with any other year, high-tech gadgets like Amazon's Kindle e-reader, Apple's iPad (and a fast-growing slate of competitors), and digital cameras and netbooks are likely to be the standouts of the holiday shopping season.

Fitting, then, that Apple's App Store offers a variety of apps designed to help you make the most of the Black Friday bargains, including a host of apps with shopping lists and PDF ad scanning capability. What are you waiting for? Those deals aren't just going to sit on the shelves—go get yourself (ahem, I mean your wife) that iPad!"

Black Friday is almost here, and your iPhone has an app for that...

Apple iPhone's Top 10 Grossing Apps in 2010

eWeek.com reports: "Apple has released a list of its top-grossing iPhone apps in 2010. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the list is dominated by entertainment apps, particularly games. Of the more productivity-related programming, iPhone and iPod Touch users evidently placed a high premium on navigation, shelling out $50 for the TomTom U.S.A. app, optimized for the iPhone 4, and free worldwide VOIP (voice over IP) calls. Baseball also ranked high, with many users downloading the MLB.com At Bat app. Despite a growing challenge from Google Android, Apple remains strong in the consumer smartphone space. Third-party developers have flocked to the company's App Store as a revenue generator, populating the online storefront with hundreds of thousands of apps. As a result, an app exists for many of life's tasks big and small.

Faced with such a galaxy of choice, though, most iPhone and iPod Touch owners seem to want apps for one vital, all-consuming function: blowing zombies to smithereens."
